Why choose us?
Welcome to Woonona Public School. Nestled in the northern suburbs of Wollongong, our school is situated between the mountains and the ocean, on the traditional lands of the Wodi Wodi people of the Five Islands Dreaming.
Woonona Public School was established in 1882 and has a long, proud history in a strong public education system, serving nearly 500 students across 20 classes. With a diverse community where 5% of our students identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and 5% come from an EALD background, we take pride in knowing each individual student, fostering an environment where every child can learn, grow, and truly belong.
Our dedicated, experienced staff utilise current, evidence-based pedagogies to support and extend each child's learning journey. The school's approach to teaching and learning is heavily invested in the work of Professor John Hattie and Dr Dylan Wiliam, Shirley Clark and Carol Dweck. The school implements Visible Learning and formative assessment strategies across all areas of the curriculum. Our work revolves around three key questions- answered by students and staff alike. Where am I? Where do I need to go? How will I get there? We regard effective feedback, evidence-based practice and data driven quality teaching as the keys to success.
In addition to our strong academic programs, we offer a multitude of opportunities for our students to explore their interests and strengths. From sporting events and dance performances, to ‘clubs’ such as library, gardening, art and ukulele club, we encourage students to participate in a variety of activities. Our on-site before and after school care is available and provides students with care and an abundance of activities.
Our sizable playground features two basketball courts, playground equipment, shaded areas, quiet spaces and a large grassed area, providing ample space for play and exploration.
We cherish our strong relationships with the local community and work collaboratively with our P&C to achieve shared goals.
Guided by our motto, "Learning and Working Together," we listen to the voices of our students and families to ensure our school meets the evolving needs of our community. We warmly invite you to join the Woonona Public School family—a place where every child is known, supported, and encouraged to flourish.
